Group Index of Soil in Highway construction
- Group Index(G.I) of soil is used to classify the fine grained soils and for checking their suitability as highway subgrade material.
- It assigned a particular group to a soil. The quality of a subgrade soil is inversely proportional to G.I., means higher G.I indicates poorer quality of soil.
G.I = 0.2a + 0.005ac + 0.01bd
where,
a= portion of material passing 0.074mm sieve, greater than 35 and less than 75%. It is expressed as whole number from 0 to 40.
b= portion of material passing 0.074mm sieve, greater than 5 and less than 35%. It is expressed as whole number from 0 to 20.
c= value of liquid limit in excess of 40 and less than 60. It is expressed as whole number ranging from 0 to 20.
d= value of plasticity index exceeding 10 and less than 30. It is expressed as whole number ranging from 0 to 20.

- 0-2. good
- 2-5. fair
- 5-10. poor
- 10-20. very poor
