Various types of Supports provided on the beam

Types of Supports in Structural Engineering:-

1. Roller Support: This type of support is mainly used for steel trusses of the bridges, which have one of their end supported on rollers. These rollers allows the movement of the beams towards left or right on account of expansion or contraction, due to change in temperature. The reaction in such a support is always perpendicular to the plane of motion of rollers(i.e. vertical reaction force). They were free to rotate and translate along the surface.

2. Hinged Support: The end of beam is hinged to support. Steel trusses which has roller support on one end always has hinged support at the other end to make beam stable. The unknown reactions at hinged end has two components i.e. horizontal and vertical reaction forces. Moment at hinged end is always zero.

3. Fixed Support: This support does not allow any movement of beams. It has three components i.e. horizontal, vertical and a moment(rotational).

4. Simple Support: This support allows rotation and translation along the surface. Here, the reaction force is vertical. Similar to roller support but don’t have rollers :).
