What is meant by Timber and what are the uses of Timber

Timber is an old age building material. The term ‘timber’ means the wood of sufficient size, which is suitable for engineering construction purpose. It is used in building construction in various locations such as beams, trusses, rafter, floors, roofs, doors, windows, poles, staircases, poles, and columns. The word Timber means “to construct or to build”. However the use of Timber is going to decrease due to scarcity, high cost of labour and Timber, availability of cheaper and stronger material.

Uses of Timber: Timber has various uses as follows:

• It is used as piles, posts, beams, lintels, doors, windows, roof members etc.

• It is used in rafters, purlins, trusses, etc.

• It is used for flooring, roofing, ceiling, panelling etc.

• It is used for interior decoration.

• It is used for making furniture, athletics goods, railway sleepers, etc.
