Actual cant is 8.24 cm for the speed of 60 kmph on a metre gauge curve. Calculate the grade compensation required on the eurve.

Sol. Given data:

Actual cant = 8.24 cm
Speed, V= 60 kmph

For metre gauge,

Cant, e= 0.80 V^2/R

8.24 = 0.80 x (60)^2 / R
or
R= 0.80 x (60)^2 / 8.24 = 349.51 m

Degree of curve, D= 1718/R = 1718/349.51 =4.9°

As grade compensation on M.G. track is 0.02% per degree on the curve,
Therefore, grade compensation required for curve
=0.02 x 4.9°= 0.1% Ans.
