Major Components of Staircase
Following are the major components:-
1) Step: It is the combination of tread and rise.
2) Rise: The vertical height between two treads is known as rise.
3) Tread: The horizontal upper portion of the step on which the foot is placed for ascending and descending is known as tread.
4) Riser: The vertical or front member of the step is known as riser.
5) Nosing: It is the projected portion of the tread.
6) Going: It is the horizontal distance between the faces of two consecutive risers.
7) Landing: A horizontal platform between two successive flights.
8) Flight: It is a continuous series of steps without any break, between landings or landing and flooring.
9) Headroom: The vertical height between the nosings of one flight, and the bottom of the flight, is known as headroom.
10) String: The inclined member of a stair which supports the ends of steps is known as string.
11) Handrail: It is the inclined rail provided over balustrades. The rail is parallel to the string.
12) Baluster: It is the vertical member fixed between string and handrail.
13) Balustrade: It is the combined framework of handrail and baluster.
14) Pitch: The angle of inclination of the stair with the floor is known as pitch.
15) Scotia: It is an additional moulding provided under the nosing to beautify the step.
16) Soffit: The under surface of a stair is known as the soffit.
