The United Nations is a world organization formed on 24th October,1945. It came into existence after World War II, when the leaders of the world, including American President Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Churchill, decided to create a world organization that would help in providing peace.

In UNO there were 6 official languages are spoken and used in documents. Chinese, English, Arabic, French, Spanish and Russian. Here, the working languages are French and English only. The membership has grown to 193 members. There are five permanent members of the Security Council: USA, Russia, China, UK and France. There are 10 non permanent members elected for 2 years terms starting on 1st January.

The newly created 193rd member is South Sudan. The UN headquarters is in New York. It has offices in Vienna, Geneva and Nairobi.

The Security Council has primary responsibility of maintaining international peace and security.
